Energy Conservation
The measures we have adopted to conserve energy include:
- Energy efficient appliances. We have provided energy efficient appliances and encourage the guests to only boil the kettle, do laundry and put on the dishwasher when absolutely necessary.
- Insulation. Windows are double glazed and have shutters which help to maintain the correct temperature and reduce the amount of sun entering the house in summer and keep the heat in in winter. All floors and ceilings on the first floor are fully insulated. Walls are 50-70cm thick and provide superb natural insulation.
- Lighting. We have tried to make large window openings to maximise natural light. Lights are frequently dimmable and easily turned off, e.g., by the side of the bed or 2 or 3 way switching in rooms. Energy saving light bulbs are being used.
- Heating. Underfloor heating heats the downstairs very efficiently in colder months. Presently this is done only using gas but we have an ongoing project to install an air source heat pump. The wood burning stoves are supplied by local providers selling wood enabling the planting of new trees better adapted to the changing climate/ environment.
- Swimming Pool Pump. The length of time this runs every day is adjusted according to the water temperature.
- Servicing. All operational devices, e.g., boiler, chimney and flues, are serviced annually to ensure efficient operation
- Solar Panels. Unfortunately, we are still not allowed to put solar panels on the roof to provide electricity to the property as we are too close to a historical monument. But when the rules change, we will!
Measures that guests can adopt during their stay include:
- Use Shutters Wisely. Stone walls make the house very well insulated so it is advisable to keep windows and doors closed as well as use the shutters in the heat of summer to maintain a comfortable temperature inside
- Take Advantage of the Sun. For example, instead of drying towels on the electric heaters in the bathrooms these might be put outside on one of the drying racks provided and dry in the sun or by using natural light whenever possible
- Reduce Carbon Footprint. Walking, cycling or using public transport whenever possible. Use the EV charger if it is necessary to use the car.
- Use Power Saving Mode. Computers/tablets/iphones etc might be used in power saving mode; turn the TV and small appliances off at the power point when not in use (not in standby mode)
