For example, timber oak beams and reclaimed stone help to create the perfect interior, being both attractive and practical. Wooden or stone flooring and log-burning stoves made a homely feel that is also highly effective in its environmentally friendly rating.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wood-fired or air-source heating.&nbsp;<\/strong>Heating in winter is an imperative creature comfort, but this can also be done in an eco-friendly way, air-source pumps providing the required heat. An air-source heat pump can be 75% more efficient than other heating options, using less electricity than it produces in heat, even if the ambient temperature is below freezing. We are presently reviewing quotes for the installation of a heat pump to power the underfloor heating. At the time of writing we also have two wood burning stoves and one open fire, using locally grown timber.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Local or home-grown produce. <\/strong>We do not have the space to produce our own fruit and vegetables on site though guests are welcome to pick and eat our olives from the tree in the courtyard or harvest the lavender plants to make sweet smelling perfumed bags for their clothing drawers. However, we source only local products for Les Remparts and guests may select and purchase their own local produce at one of the local markets or farms. This cuts down on the carbon footprint, and emphasises the field to table approach. We are situated in the countryside, surrounded by vineyards and farmland, which lends itself nicely to having fresh meat, fruit, vegetables and of course wine, much of which is now also grown using bio friendly methods.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Actively encouraging wildlife<\/strong>. In a similar vein, having an outdoor space that welcomes local wildlife by not using any pesticides and by growing plants and flowers that attract birds and bugs not only makes for a pleasant rural retreat, but is also doing its bit for sustaining the eco-system. We have planted buddleia, roses and lavender, which all attract bees and butterflies and then of course birds and insects. All are important for pollination, which in turn ensures our fruit and vegetable crops grow successfully. We have plans to add bird and insect boxes towards the end of 2023. We also leave a pair of binoculars for guests to use to enjoy the wild birds in the area and two pairs of walking sticks and portable seats can also be found in the hallway.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Public transport links, cycling and walking trails.&nbsp;<\/strong>If people are choosing an eco-friendly holiday, it is likely that they won\u2019t want to bring a car, preferring to rely on public transport, bicycles or walking everywhere. With that in mind, Les Remparts is the ideal spot located at the heart of a village where you are able to walk to everything, as well as being a few kilometres by car or bicycle to Velines railway station to travel west to Bordeaux or east to Bergerac and beyond. There are bus services too linking Gensac to other villages and the Dordogne river is at the bottom of the hill in Pessac offering canoeing and kayaking. You will find other links on this website to where you can reserve a canoe, hire a bicycle or how to find your way to the railway station as we wish to make your stay more pleasurable and easy for you to navigate the surrounding area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EV charging point.&nbsp;<\/strong>Not all of our guests will want to walk or cycle, of course, but they may have an electric car to cut down on toxic fumes being released into the atmosphere. At the time of writing we are ordering an EV charging point so that in 2024 you may charge your electric car battery at Les Remparts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recycling<\/strong>. Waste management procedures include sorting recyclables (glass, plastics, general waste). Several items in Les Remparts have been sourced from the Recyclerie in Pessac which is open to the public every Wednesday. Plans are underway to recycle waste food from households starting in 2024 to become compost and not landfill. This is being organised by the Town Hall of Gensac.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are many other practical ways we are employing to safegaurd the environment and sustainability of our operations to deliver our Environmental Charter and these are expanded upon in the other links, e.g., <a the local flora and fauna.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
